Giving back to cycling on your birthday!

January 28, 2009

Today is my birthday. They come too quickly and the day passes in a wink of an eye.

The past several weeks I've been trying to celebrate this birthday as I have been doing for the past decade or so figuring out a gift I can give others. I am solicited all the time for donations to many worthy causes and Roger and I dig deep every year to try and accommodate quite a few good bicycling and environmental missions. We consider these to be at the bottom of donation lists and in need of help.

A request that I never get is from organizations that want to create outings for underpriveleged kids. Coincidentally, I received an e-mail just weeks ago from someone interested in our Holland Bike and Barge Tour. He introduced himself as volunteer board V.P. of this group - www.bolderoptions.org. Noting that he was attracted by our efforts on environmental and bicycling advocacy he inquired if we could customize a Holland bicycle trip for his group.

Well, I was thrilled at the prospect of helping at-risk kids enjoy a bicycle trip. But I was to find out at the next e-mail that the trip was actually for the board members as a perk for all their hard work as volunteers. So, I'm back to the drawing board.

If you're reading this and know of any worthwhile mentoring organizations (preferably on the east coast) who I could contact to donate Bike and the Like services, let us know at info@bikeandthelike.com.

Happy Birthday to everyone!
